International Forum on Biomass Energy Utilization Technology Ushers in a New Era of Industry

The International Forum on Biomass Energy Technology and Application, organized by Biogas Institute of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (BIOMA), was held in Chengdu from November 11 to 12, 2019. With the theme of “Green, Innovation, Cooperation and Win-Win”, the forum aims to promote academic exchanges, enhance international cooperation and facilitate the development of biomass energy. Dr. Tang Huajun, President of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering attended the forum and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.

On behalf of CAAS, Dr. Tang Huajun extended warm congratulations on the opening of the forum. He pointed out that biomass energy is an important clean, green, low-carbon and renewable energy. As the fourth largest energy right after oil, coal, and natural gas, it takes an important position in the whole energy system. Facing with tightening resources capacities, severe environmental pollution, and ecological degradation, humans have unprecedented demands for the utilization of biomass energy. He hoped that participants would enhance communication, further expand cooperation and jointly promote the research and development so as to promote the sustainable development of China's agricultural and rural economy, human energy production and consumption revolution, as well as to improve the global environment and energy pressure, by providing more theoretical support and technical solutions.

Over 40 senior researchers from 18 countries such as the United States, Germany and Japan and other 400 representatives from 200 universities, research institutes, administrative departments and enterprises attended the forum. The development and potential of biomass energy utilization from the perspectives of technology, policy and industry were discussed at the forum.

The international forum serves as a platform for academic exchanges between scientific research institutions and enterprises, and promotes commercialization of biomass energy. More importantly, it also contributes to the biomass technology transfer at the international stage.

As the only state-level research institute specialized in biogas scientific research, BIOMA has completed over 100 national key scientific programs such as National High-tech R&D Program of China(863 program), National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), and National Natural Science Foundation of China and so on. During the 40 years since its foundation, it has obtained over 200 patents and published 600 scientific papers, won four second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, one third place of National Science and Technology Progress Award and one first prize of Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. Moreover, BIOMA has undertaken 120 training courses granted by Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and other government departments, together with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations development programme, ESCAP and other international organizations, providing training for over 3,000 participants from more than 130 countries who are engaged in technology research, management and promotion.
